First game in 2018, Depor only have two casualties, but deals with internal problems. The rival is living a good moment, but arrives to the meeting without six players, including Bakambu.

Deportivo return into competition and want to change the course in 2018, but things are still shacking after the exit of sporting director Richard Barral and the controversy for the players’ bonuses. Coach Cristóbal Parralo will try to clean the slate as Depor visit Villarreal CF (Estadio de La Cerámica, Sunday, 18h30 CET).

The good news is that the coach is only having two casualties for the first game in 2018.  Playmaker Fede Cartabia remains out after his groin surgery, his return is still expected for February. The other casualty is Fabian Schär, who is suspended after seeing a fifth yellow card in the derby with RC Celta.

His replacement at the centre of the defence will be Raúl Albentosa, who will be fit to play after skipping two trainings on last week due to illness. Parralo has been testing a 4-4-2 formation with three attackers at the same time: Adrián, Lucas Pérez and Florin Andone. Lucas didn’t train on Thursday due to a muscle problem, but he should be fit for the game.

The first rival in 2018 is Villarreal CF, the Valencians have been facing big problems with the injuries during the season, at the beginning of December coach Javi Calleja had up to nine casualties, which forced to face the game against CD Leganés (1-3 loss) with five lads from the academy.

At this point the situation with the injuries is still complicated, Calleja will at least have six casualties for the game against Depor. The first five are centre midfielder Manu Trigueros (suspension), keeper Andrés Fernández (knee ligaments), centre-back Rubén Semedo (muscle), centre midfielder Bruno Soriano (tibia), and striker Nicola Sansone (muscle). If this isn’t enough Cédric Bakambu is about to be transferred to China for €40 million. The Congolese is the top scorer at the team with nine goals in favour and won’t play against Depor.

And the list of casualties can be bigger. Left-back Jaume Costa, centre-back Daniele Bonera and playmaker Roberto Soriano picked knocks in the league game with Valencia CF and are doubtful for Sunday.

Villarreal CF are having a busy calendar in January and in midweek they lost in Copa against CD Leganés (0-1), so Calleja could be tempted in making some rotations. Finally, striker Enes Ünal is their first winter. He was hired during last summer coming from Manchester City, he played in the Europa League preliminary round and was then loaned to Levante UD, now he is back after scoring and assisting once in seven league appearances.
