REVIEW: EXTREMADURA 0 – DEPORTIVO 1 (LIGA)

25 Aug 2018
First victory on the season, Deportivo didn’t impress, but was lucky enough to find a goal against a rival that put a great fight.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Natxo González presented a couple of novelties. Pedro Mosquera and Carles Gil were starters leaving Edu Expósito and Pedro Sánchez on the bench. The rest was the expected 4-3-1-2 formation.

Dani Giménez was the starting goalie, David Simón covered the right side in defence, Diego Caballo performed on the left. The centre-backs were Eneko Bóveda and Domingos Duarte. New comer Vicente Gómez and Álex Bergantiños joined Mosquera at midfield. Carles Gil was the playmaker playing behind Quique González and Borja Valle.

At Extremadura UD, coach Juan Sabas saw how his club inscribed Chuli and Diego Capel at the last minute, the duo was on the bench with the draw been switched into a 4-4-2. Enric Gallego and Vincenzo Rennella were the references in attack.

FIRST HALF
It wasn’t a good half for Deportivo, the Galician outfit didn’t offer anything in offense despite having the ball possession (66%). The locals had the better opportunities at the end of the first part and only a good save by Dani Giménez prevented the goal.

The locals started the game putting a high pressure, Depor weren’t feeling comfortable on the pitch, but had the first approximation in a free-kick in which the cross from David Simón wasn’t properly managed by Mosquera (5’).

With the passage of the minutes the Galicians took control of the actions, they were focusing the attacks on the right through David Simón and Mosquera. In one of those actions Borja Valle wasn’t able to connect the ball properly searching for a cross (11’).

Both offensive lines weren’t creating any harm, Extremadura UD were missing too many passes (their accuracy was only 58% at the middle of the half), while Depor weren’t finding the ideas to create scoring chances.

The first opportunity for the visiting side came until minute 27, Quique González picked the ball inside the area in a free-kick action taken by Carles Gil, but his final shot from the left side of the area was deflected to corner-kick.

Then the game changed. Extremadura UD should have scored at minute 31, Bóveda committed a huge mistake trying to pass the ball to Duarte, instead he assisted Enric Gallego and the striker released a low shot that Dani Giménez cleared to corner-kick.

Three minutes later it was Caballo who failed, this time the shot of Renella was blocked and later the attempt of Kike Marquez was slightly deflected with the ball passing close to the far post. The locals pushed within the final minutes, and Depor had the last chance in a cross of Caballo that Borja Valle headed out (45’).

SECOND HALF
Not too much improvement in the second part, Depor were having problems to create chances, but at least there were some clear opportunities. Quique González seized one of them and Borja Valle missed the chance to define the meeting before the local harassment.

The final part started with the goal of Deportivo. Caballo started the play on the left, he assisted Borja Valle inside the area, the striker was about to lose the ball, but a bad clearance by the local defence allowed Quique González to score from close range.

Depor started to find the cracks at midfield and Carles Gil could have scored after an error of Diez, but his shot passed close to the woodwork (58’). Then Natxo made the first substitution and Pablo Mari entered for Domingos Duarte, who picked a muscle problem minutes after the goal.

Borja Valle should have scored at minute 68, he dribbled local keeper Manu García, but later failed against an empty goal (68’). Depor were wasting the chance to secure the game and the locals almost score the equalizer through a shot of Renella saved by Dani Giménez (71’).

Then Didier Moreno debuted replacing Vicente Gómez, the Colombian revitalized midfield territory and it was him who released a cross that Quique González couldn’t connect after a previous touch by Borja Valle (78’).

Extremadura UD pushed within the final ten minutes and had some chances through set-pieces (four lateral free-kicks and three corner-kicks in this frame). Christian Santos debuted and replaced Carles Gil and the last opportunity in the game was for Renella with a header that missed the target (90+2’)

AFTER THE GAME
Big result for Depor, but the Galician team is still leaving doubts. It is missing ideas to create chances and was pushed against the ropes in the final minutes after Borja Valle wasted the chance to score the second goal. Besides, there were some mismatches at defence and midfield that almost cost a goal.

Deportivo have now added four points in two matchdays and will continue to play on the road. The next game is the visit to CD Tenerife (Heliodoro Rodríguez López, Saturday, 20h45 CET).
