REVIEW: LAS PALMAS 1 – DEPORTIVO 1 (LIGA)

04 Nov 2018
Dramatic point for a Deportivo that was against the tide, but that was able to equalize at the last second. The Galician were better in the first part and in the second the Canarians were closer to the 2-0 than to the 1-1.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Natxo González decided to not repeat the lineup as Pablo Mari and Saúl García regained their places leaving Michelle Somma and Diego Caballo on the bench. The draw was still a 4-3-1-2.

Dani Giménez was the starting goalie, David Simón covered the right side in defence, Saúl played on the left, Mari joined Domingos Duarte at the central positions, Álex Bergantiños, Edu Expósito and Vicente Gómez were the centre midfielders, then Pedro Sánchez played behind Carlos Fernández and Quique González in attack.

At UD Las Palmas, coach Manolo Giménez chose to play with Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta on the right wing, Sergio Araujo, Rafa Mir and ex-Depor Rubén Castro were the other references in attack.

FIRST HALF
Not an exciting first part at the Canary Islands, Deportivo controlled the actions within the first half and hour, it hit the post once and the local team had its moment within the final fifteen minutes without having a clear chance to score.

UD Las Palmas started the game putting pressure up front, Depor didn’t feel comfortable in the output of the ball and there were some mismatches at the back that were luckily cleared by the defence. With the passage of the minutes Depor started to have the ball possession, while the locals were betting in the counterattack.

The Canarians were surprising with quick moves, but the defensive line was cutting the plays before reaching Depor’s area. The first chance to score came at minute 16, a low shot from Pedro Sánchez was cleared to corner-kick by local goalie Raúl Fernández.

Depor started to deserve the lead and it hit the post at minute 21, a lateral free-kick of Pedro Sánchez was headed by Carlos Fernández and the ball hit the near post and was later cleared by a defender. The visiting side was having the game under control, but the counterattack from UD Las Palmas were always dangerous.

The first -and only- chance for the locals in the first part came at minute 31, after a cross from the right the ball reached the left side of the area and Pablo Mari lost it against , who late assisted Javi Castellanos and his shot went wide.

UD Las Palmas gave a step forward within the final fifteen minutes of the first part, Depor were no longer arriving into the rival’s area, but neither suffered as the defence was well placed. The only danger for the visiting side was a lateral free-kick in which Dani Giménez caught the ball (41’).

SECOND HALF
Deportivo didn’t play a good second half, it was against the tide all time long and Las Palmas missed their chances to score the second goal, and the Galicians found a deserved equalizer at the last second. The final half started with the surprise that Rubén Castro had to be replaced by Tana, it seems that due to a physical problem.

And Tana starred in the local goal as he assisted Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta, who scored with a strong shot from outside the area. The locals suddenly felt stronger and were close to score the second through a strong shot of Rafa Mir that missed the target (52’).

The first modification at Depor was the entry of Caballo for Saúl, the left-back had big problems on his side and second coach Tapia decided to refresh the position. The true is that the picture didn’t change as Caballo also faced problems on his side and his crosses lacked accuracy.

Depor could have scored at minute 58, after two straight corner-kicks, no one was able to push the ball in after the cross of Pedro Sánchez was poorly cleared by Raúl Fernández. The visiting side started to push and Carlos Fernández had a chance to score at minute 63, he headed the ball on target after a great play by Vicente Gómez and Raúl Fernández made the save. n the next play Álex attempted a low shot that was saved by the local keeper.

Christian Santos was the second substitution as he replaced Pedro Sánchez. At his height on the game Depor were in total control of the actions, it attacked and combined well, but the plays weren’t ending in shots on target.

Meanwhile, Las Palmas were trying to release a counterattack. Their next chance came at minute 69, Rafa Mir found the ball at the edge of the area after a cross from the left, but he sent the ball over the crossbar. Carles Gil was the last substitution as he replaced Álex.

Then things changed within the last fifteen minutes, because Depor were too anxious and Las Palmas could have closed the game in a couple of counterattacks and errors committed by Depor’s defence. The main one was a big error of Carles Gil that allowed Rafa Mir to fire from the edge of the area when he was alone, but the ball went over the crossbar (89’).

Second coach Tapia was sent off at the last minute after he lost the patience with Manolo Giménez as his team was losing time. And Depor made a final push in the added time, David Simón assisted Carlos Fernández, who fired a low shot that was cleared by Raúl Fernández (90+4’)

In the resulting corner-kick, Carles Gil released the cross from the left, Quique González headed the ball at the near post, it went into the far post and Domingos Duarte was there to head the ball home.

AFTER THE GAME
Deserved result, Las Palmas played with its cards and had things in favour, until a goal in added time by Domingos Duarte earned a point for the Galicians. Deportivo were better in the first part and lost the control in the second.

The result allows Deportivo to be second at the standing waiting to see what Granada CF and AD Alcorcón do on Sunday. The next game is the visit of Real Oviedo to the Riazor (Saturday, 20h30 CET).
