ROY MAKAAY is a Dutch striker and is sometimes compared to the Dutch legend Marco van Basten. Makaay went from Vitesse Arnhem to Tenerife, and despite the relegation of his club, had two good years on the island.
This attracted the attention of Deportivo, and he was signed by the Galicians in 1999. Makaay immediately became top scorer of the team winning the 2000 Liga.
Roy Makaay is quick and deadly with both feet and good in the air. But he is often criticized for his 'absence' in many matches. The real problem, however, is that Makaay plays alone upfront most of the time, or is used as right winger, not his natural position at all.
Makaay scored 44 goals in his first two seasons at Deportivo, but did not have the best of luck with injuries. He damaged his ankle ligaments during a freak training ground accident involving Dennis Bergkamp at EURO 2000, and then knee ligaments early in 2001 just when he hit a purple patch of form.
He had a golden opportunity to take back his starting place in 2002/03, when Diego Tristán was still injured. He scored a legendary hat trick at Bayern Munchen's Olympic Stadium (2-3) and was on phenomenal form that season, winning the Golden Boot award with 29 Liga goals. He was sold to Bayern Munich at the end of the season, although it took quite a while before both clubs could agree on a deal. Roy Makaay has scored 79 Liga goals, 12 Champions League goals, 3 UEFA Cup goals and 3 Copa goals for Deportivo. This makes a total of 97 goals in four seasons.
But his hattrick in the Champions League also impressed Bayern's officials, the transfer to the Bundesliga was realised during the pre-season 2004/2005, since then the fans of Deportivo are arguing that Deportivo's striking zone isn't the same anymore.
