Deportivo B ‘product’ IVÁN CARRIL is one of the players given a chance by coach Caparrós during the season 2005/2006. Together with Senel and Iago he made his Liga debut that season, like Xisco and Pita had already done the year before. As an attacking player, Caparrós believes in the skills of Iván Carril. For his part, the creative player gave glimpses of his class that year and is currently on loan at Palencia. 2007 might see his return as a professional player in La Coruña.

During the season 2004/2005, the final one of Javier Irureta at Deportivo after seven years, several youngsters were training with the first squad. This included young Iván Carril (19 back then), the younger brother of Deportivo B striker Jonathan Carril. Right-footed Iván Carril can play at all attacking positions, expect as a pure striker. Due to his kind of dribbling, he usually plays at the left-side. But despite his talent, Irureta hadn’t used him when the Basque coach packed his bags and left La Coruña.

The arrival of Caparrós in 2005 opened doors to Iván Carril. This confidence immediately had an impact when on the first match day of the season 2005/2006, Iván Carril occupied the left wing of Deportivo at Mallorca because both Víctor Sánchez and Munitis were injured. With Capdevila behind him, and Sergio and Duscher next to him, fast Iván Carril was preferred above Momo after the goodbye of Fran and Luque’s departure to Newcastle. For the first time in years Deportivo were able to take away three points from the island (0-1). A few weeks earlier Iván Carril participated during several Intertoto matches, and scored a goal against Olympique Marseille. However, Pedro Munitis became Caparrós preferred player at the left-side and the Cantabrian veteran even won this website’s Best Player of the Season 2005/2006 award.

Iván Carril reached a total of 294 Liga minutes that season divided over one starting place and nine entries. During one of occasions, at Espanyol on 3 May 2006, he scored Depor’s equalizer before Diego Tristán sentenced the match (1-2). In this match, but also during his other performances, Iván Carril convinced many that he’s talented. Speedy Iván Carril has flair and doesn’t seem to be afraid to act on the pitch. These characteristics may have been one of the reasons why Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid wanted to add him to their B-teams at the end of the season. The interest of Real Madrid wasn’t new, because one year earlier Iván Carril already had rejected an offer.

The player himself labelled his Liga debut as “without a doubt my best moment as a player. Until the season started I couldn’t have thought about competing with Valerón and Luque (back then) to fight for a place.” But at the same time Iván Carril indicated his maturity. “My family already has told me to keep both my feet on the ground. I will only concentrate on playing good football.” Besides, Iván Carril also didn’t want to disappoint his new coach who gave him the opportunity. “Since his arrival he has been giving attention to the youth players, and we want to give something back.”

All-in-all, Iván Carril is considered to be the finest talent Deportivo B have delivered during the past years. In 2005 this was already rewarded with an extension of his contract until 2010. During the seasons 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 he would have a aficionado contract. And if Deportivo would want to keep him for another three years after 2007, his contract would be turned into one of a professional player. However, his progress went faster as expected. Every amateur in Spain playing 10 matches for a professional club needs to have a professional contract, something which was achieved by Iván Carril early May 2006.

This contract and the complete renovation of Depor’s squad during the 2006 summer months didn’t improve Iván Carril’s of playing though. The fact that he now had a professional contract made him occupy an ‘official’ spot in Depor’s first squad. And these spots needed to be filled by the signings of, among others, Riki, Cristián, Verdú, Estoyanoff, Pablo Álvarez and Luis Felipe. And on Iván Carril’s positions there still were Valerón and Iago. It led to an easy conclusion that Iván Carril would play the season 2006/2007 on loan at another club to get the minutes he needed for his progress.

Vecindario, newly-promoted to the Segunda División A, became his new destination together with striker Xisco and midfielder Ángel Guirado. In July 2006 the deal was done and Iván Carril mentioned it “a step forward” in his career. But while Xisco became their main striking reference, Iván Carril didn’t achieve his main target: playing minutes. The offensive player was used in just eight matches of which four as a starter. His colleague Ángel Guirado played even less. But not even the arrival of a new coach, Galician Fernando Castro Santos, changed this, while Vecindario needed to offload players to sign new ones.

So, in January 2007 a new destination for Iván Carril was found: Palencia (a city situated between Valladolid and Burgos) from the Segunda División B Grupo II. Iván Carril will stay there until 30 June 2007 and could become an important part in their fight for promotion. In this way actually playing for the leaders of this competition doesn’t automatically mean to be worse off than when playing for the bottom-club of one higher competition level. Anyway, it’s up to Iván Carril to achieve playing minutes and to return to Deportivo this June with something to show.
