Deportivo 1949–50 Season
The finest season in Deportivo de La Coruña’s early history. Under manager Alejandro Scopelli, Deportivo finished runners-up in La Liga with a campaign that took the club to within a whisker of their first league title. Only Atlético Madrid, themselves in exceptional form, prevented what would have been a historic achievement for a provincial Galician club.
The season established the “Golden Decade” reputation — a period when Deportivo were genuinely among Spain’s elite clubs. The team combined Galician character with Scopelli’s Argentinian footballing philosophy, creating an attractive and effective side that earned the respect of the entire country. The title challenge demonstrated that, even then, Spanish football’s elite did not have to be solely Madrid or Barcelona.
