Primera División
Deportivo 1956–57 Season
16th Place
Manager: Unknown
The final season of Deportivo de La Coruña’s first extended period in Primera División ended in relegation — a painful conclusion to what had been a remarkable 15-year run in the top flight. The departure from the first tier marked the end of the Golden Decade and the beginning of three decades of oscillation between the Primera and Segunda División.
The relegation should not overshadow the achievement: a provincial Galician club from a city of fewer than 200,000 people had competed at the top level of Spanish football for a decade and a half, finishing runners-up in La Liga and establishing Estadio Riazor as one of the country’s most atmospheric football venues. The foundation for the eventual Super Dépor era had been built.
