Deportivo 1994–95 Season
The greatest season in Deportivo de La Coruña’s history to that point — and the launch pad for everything that followed. Under Arsenio Iglesias, Deportivo finished runners-up in La Liga with 60 points, just six behind Real Madrid, and won the Copa del Rey — their first major domestic trophy, defeating Valencia 2–1 in the final at Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville.
The squad featured Bebeto — the Brazilian World Cup winner who had helped Brazil lift the trophy in the United States the previous summer — alongside the elegant Galician midfielder Fran, the combative Nigerian goalkeeper Peter Rufai, and the quietly dominant Brazilian holding midfielder Mauro Silva. Together they formed one of the most complete squads in Spain.
The Copa del Rey victory broke the club’s major trophy drought and proved to the world — and to the Galician supporters who had waited so long — that this was a genuinely elite football club. European competition beckoned the following season, and the Super Dépor era was in full bloom.
