Deportivo 1995–96 Season
The 1995–96 season marked the transition between Arsenio Iglesias’s era and the beginning of Javier Irureta’s reign — and produced one of the club’s finest European campaigns. Deportivo reached the UEFA Cup semi-finals, defeating Ajax — the champions of Europe the previous season — along the way in one of the most remarkable results in the competition’s history.
Under Irureta, who took charge partway through the season, the squad immediately adapted to a new tactical approach: more controlled possession, better defensive organisation, and with the Brazilian Djalminha beginning to emerge as one of the most exciting players in European football. The UEFA Cup run ended with elimination by Valencia at the penultimate stage, but the European nights at Riazor were already establishing the ground as one of the continent’s most feared.
