Javier Irureta’s first full season in charge saw Deportivo de La Coruña cement their status as a regular top-four La Liga side. The squad was evolving rapidly — the Moroccan centre-back Noureddine Naybet arrived to anchor the defence, while Djalminha’s increasingly brilliant performances were making him one of the most discussed players in Spain.
