Manager: Javier Irureta
The 1997–98 season saw Djalminha reach his peak as one of the most creative players in European football. The Brazilian’s combination of technical virtuosity, long-range shooting, and vision made him the focal point of Irureta’s Deportivo — and the player that visiting defences most feared at Estadio Riazor.
With Mauro Silva providing the defensive platform that allowed Djalminha to express himself, Naybet commanding the defence, and the full-back pairing becoming one of the best in La Liga, Deportivo were developing the squad depth and quality that would produce the title two years later. A fourth-place finish was a solid platform.
