Deportivo 2009–10 Season
The inevitable arrived in 2009–10: Deportivo de La Coruña were relegated from La Liga after 19 consecutive seasons in the top flight. Finishing 18th — bottom of the table — the club’s descent from Champions League semi-finalists to relegated side had taken just six seasons.
The relegation reflected the structural difficulties facing provincial clubs unable to match the financial power of the emerging La Liga giants. Deportivo’s Super Dépor model — built on astute management, collective spirit, and exceptional talent identification — had been extraordinary while it lasted. But without the revenue streams of the largest clubs, sustaining that level of performance across a decade ultimately proved impossible.
A Coruña grieved, but the memories of 2000 and 2004 were indelible. Deportivo would return — they always had before.
