Deportivo 2019–20 Season
The 2019–20 season brought the most painful chapter yet in Deportivo’s long decline: relegation from Segunda División to the third tier of Spanish football for the first time in the club’s history. Former player and manager Fernando Vázquez — a Galician football institution — returned for a second stint in charge, but even his knowledge of the club and region could not arrest the freefall.
The season was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which suspended play between March and June 2020. When football resumed, Deportivo — already in dire straits — lost 8 of their remaining 11 matches. The relegation, confirmed in August 2020, sent them to Primera RFEF (formerly Segunda División B), the third tier — a destination utterly unthinkable for a club that had competed at Champions League level just 16 years earlier.
Attendances at Riazor, before the pandemic closed grounds entirely, showed a fan base still committed but increasingly disheartened. The gap between the Champions League nights of 2004 and the reality of third-tier Spanish football had become almost incomprehensible.
