Deportivo 2021–22 Season
Under new manager Rubén de la Barrera, Deportivo de La Coruña finally ended two years in the third tier with a dominant Primera RFEF campaign. Winning their group with 82 points — the best record in the division — Deportivo then navigated the promotion play-offs to secure a return to Segunda División. The night of promotion was celebrated across A Coruña with scenes not witnessed since the Super Dépor era.
Keko Gontán was the attacking heartbeat of the campaign, contributing 14 goals and numerous assists from a free role behind the striker. The winger’s quality and the team’s collective organisation — conceding just 32 goals in 38 matches — made Deportivo the standout side in their tier.
The promotion ended a deeply painful two-year absence from professional football. For supporters who had watched this club compete in the Champions League semi-finals in 2004, the journey to the third tier and back had been a sobering lesson in the fragility of football success. But with promotion secured, the rebuilding project could begin in earnest.
