Deportivo 2024–25 Season

The return to La Liga after five years away. Deportivo de La Coruña, under the continued management of Imanol Idiakez, navigated their first Primera División season since 2018–19 with the primary objective clearly in mind: survival. In a division now dominated by the financial power of the top clubs, newly promoted sides face an enormous challenge — and Deportivo’s 2024–25 campaign was a sustained battle against the drop.

The gulf in quality between Segunda División and Primera is significant in the modern Spanish game, and Deportivo felt it acutely. Mario Soriano remained the squad’s most technically gifted player, adapting well to the step up in quality and contributing 9 goals. But across the squad, the pace and precision of La Liga opponents — particularly the top-six clubs — exposed limitations that had not been visible in the second tier.

Estadio Riazor was, as ever, Deportivo’s greatest asset. The home record was significantly better than the away performance, with Riazor’s atmosphere continuing to create difficulties for visiting sides regardless of their league position. Several notable home results — including victories over established mid-table clubs — provided the points foundation for survival.

A 16th-place finish, achieved with a few points to spare, represented a successful outcome for a promoted side with limited resources. The challenge for 2025–26 is to consolidate at this level, build on the lessons of the first campaign back, and — for the most optimistic Depor fans — begin to dream of a sustained presence in the top flight for the first time since the end of the Super Dépor era.

Twenty years after the Miracle of Riazor, Deportivo de La Coruña are back in La Liga. The journey back has been painful and long — but the lighthouse of the Torre de Hércules still watches over the Galician coast, and the club’s story is far from over.
